About the foundation

The Adolph & Esther Gottlieb Foundation was established in 1976 by the painter Adolph Gottlieb and his wife Esther, following Adolph's death in 1974. Rooted in Gottlieb's own experience as an artist who struggled financially early in his career, the Foundation is dedicated to supporting mature, creative painters, sculptors, and printmakers who have been working for at least twenty years and who demonstrate financial need. Its core mission is to provide direct financial assistance to individual artists, enabling them to continue their work without the pressures of commercial or institutional demands. The Foundation operates two main programs: the Individual Support Grants, awarded annually to artists in need, and the Emergency Grants, which offer rapid relief to artists facing unforeseen catastrophic events such as fire, flood, or medical emergencies.

Application guidance

Artists should carefully review the eligibility criteria before applying: you must have been a practicing painter, sculptor, or printmaker for at least twenty years and demonstrate financial need. The application requires detailed financial information, including income, assets, and expenses, as well as documentation of your artistic career. It is advisable to prepare your materials well in advance, as the process is thorough and competitive. The Foundation values authenticity and clarity in both the artwork and the application; avoid overstating your circumstances or submitting incomplete financial records. For emergency grants, timely submission with clear evidence of the catastrophic event is essential. Remember that the panel seeks to support artists who have shown a sustained commitment to their practice, so present your work and history honestly and comprehensively.
