About the foundation

The Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée (CNC) is France's primary public funder for cinema, with a mandate that extends to international co-production through its Aide aux cinémas du monde (ACM) program. Established in 1946 and now operating under the French Ministry of Culture, the CNC has long been a cornerstone of French cultural policy, supporting film production, distribution, and exhibition. The ACM fund, created in 2012 in partnership with the Institut français, specifically targets feature-length fiction, animation, and documentary projects from around the world, offering pre-filming grants to encourage artistic exchange and global cinematic diversity. Its founding ethos is rooted in the belief that cinema is both an art form and a cultural good, deserving of public stewardship beyond market forces.

Application guidance

Applicants should first ensure their project aligns with ACM's requirements: feature-length fiction, animation, or documentary, with a French co-producer attached and a director who is not French. The fund prioritizes projects that demonstrate strong artistic vision, cultural relevance, and a feasible production plan. Deadlines are typically biannual (usually in January and June), and submissions must be made through the CNC's online portal. It is crucial to read the guidelines thoroughly, as incomplete or ineligible applications are rejected without review. Given the competitive nature, a compelling director's statement, a well-structured budget, and evidence of previous work are essential. Building a relationship with a reputable French production company before applying is highly recommended, as the co-producer plays a key role in the application and subsequent management of the grant.
