About the organization

Creative Capital was founded in 1999 by Ruby Lerner and others as a response to the National Endowment for the Arts' elimination of individual artist grants. Its mission is to fund bold, innovative projects that might not find support elsewhere, providing not just money but also advisory services and professional development. Over two decades, it has awarded over $50 million to more than 800 artists across disciplines including visual arts, performing arts, literature, film, and technology. The organization emphasizes long-term commitment to artists, often supporting them at critical junctures in their careers.

Taking part

Creative Capital awards are highly competitive, with a multi-stage application process. Artists should present projects that are conceptually rigorous, formally inventive, and demonstrate a clear vision. The organization values projects that are at a critical stage and would benefit from both financial and advisory support. Applications typically require a detailed project description, work samples, and budget. It is advisable to review past awardees to understand the range of supported work. Deadlines are annual and vary by discipline; check the website for specifics.
