About the foundation
Dia Art Foundation was established in 1974 as a non-profit organization committed to commissioning, presenting, and preserving ambitious works of art from the 1960s to the present. Founded by Heiner Friedrich, Philippa de Menil, and Helen Winkler, Dia was conceived as a platform for artists whose projects demanded long-term commitment and unconventional spaces, exemplified by permanent installations such as Walter De Maria's The Lightning Field and Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty. Its mission is to foster the creation and appreciation of art that challenges conventional boundaries, with a particular emphasis on site-specific and conceptually rigorous practices.

Application guidance
Artists should approach Dia with projects that align with its history of supporting ambitious, often large-scale or long-duration works. While Dia does not have an open call for exhibitions, opportunities such as the Spiritual Pedagogies Fellowship at Dia Chelsea are announced periodically. Prospective applicants are advised to thoroughly research Dia's programmatic focus and past projects, and to articulate how their proposal engages with Dia's commitment to artistic experimentation and site-specificity. Applications should demonstrate a clear conceptual framework and feasibility, with attention to the unique contexts of Dia's venues.
