About the foundation

The Foundation for Contemporary Arts (FCA) was established in 1963 by Jasper Johns and John Cage as an artist-led initiative to support innovative work in contemporary art, dance, music, poetry, and theater. Its founding ethos is one of mutual aid: artists helping artists. FCA provides grants to individual artists at critical junctures in their careers, with a focus on those whose work is experimental, risk-taking, and not easily supported by traditional funding sources. The foundation's core mission is to encourage the creation of new work by offering direct financial assistance and validation, free from bureaucratic constraints.

Application guidance

FCA grants are awarded through a nomination process for most programs, but the Emergency Grants program accepts direct applications from artists. For all opportunities, carefully review the eligibility criteria and deadlines on the FCA website. The application process is designed to be straightforward, requiring work samples and a concise proposal. Emphasize the experimental nature of your work and how the grant would enable a specific project or period of creative development. Avoid over-polishing; authenticity and clarity about your artistic process are valued. If you are not nominated, consider reaching out to past grantees or arts professionals who may be familiar with your work to discuss potential nomination pathways.
