About the foundation

The Girl Child Art Foundation (GCAF) is a non-profit organization based in Nigeria that uses art as a tool for social change, with a particular focus on empowering girls and young women. Founded in 2009, GCAF provides a platform for creative expression, mentorship, and advocacy, addressing issues such as gender-based violence, child marriage, and access to education. Its flagship program, the Free Your Mind Contest, invites young artists to submit works that challenge stereotypes and envision a more equitable society. Through exhibitions, workshops, and community outreach, GCAF fosters a supportive environment where art becomes a means of personal and collective liberation.

Application guidance

Artists interested in GCAF's programs should monitor the website for annual contest calls, typically announced in early spring. Submissions are open to girls and young women, often with age categories. Works in any medium are welcome, but must align with the theme of empowerment and social critique. Include a brief artist statement and ensure digital images are high-quality. Given the foundation's advocacy focus, avoid overly abstract or apolitical pieces; clarity of message and personal narrative are valued. There is no entry fee, but selected artists may be asked to contribute to exhibition costs. For general inquiries, email is preferred over phone.
