About the foundation
The Laura Boss Poetry Foundation was established to honor the legacy of Laura Boss, a poet known for her direct, emotionally resonant work and her long-standing commitment to nurturing poetic voices. The foundation stewards her literary estate and advances her mission through the annual Lips competition, which invites poets to engage with themes of desire, intimacy, and the body—subjects Boss explored with unflinching honesty. By providing a platform for emerging and established poets alike, the foundation seeks to perpetuate Boss's belief in poetry as a vehicle for personal and political candor.

Poets considering the Lips competition should first familiarize themselves with Laura Boss's poetry to understand the aesthetic and thematic concerns the foundation champions. Submissions should reflect a willingness to explore intimate subject matter with precision and without sensationalism. Carefully review the guidelines for length, formatting, and deadlines, as the foundation values professionalism. Since the competition is annual, plan ahead to ensure your work is polished and submitted well before the deadline. Simultaneous submissions are often permitted, but verify current rules. Above all, approach the opportunity as a chance to contribute to a living tradition of honest, courageous poetry.
