About the foundation

The Loewe Foundation, established in 1988 as the private cultural arm of the Spanish luxury house Loewe, operates with a mandate to support poetry, dance, design, architecture, and—most prominently—contemporary craft. Its founding ethos is rooted in a belief that traditional making and material intelligence are not nostalgic pursuits but vital, evolving languages. The Foundation's flagship initiative, the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize, launched in 2016, has become a defining platform for contemporary craft, awarding an annual prize to a maker whose work demonstrates exceptional technical mastery, artistic vision, and a willingness to push the boundaries of the discipline. The prize is not a competition for heritage reproduction; it seeks work that is conceptually rigorous and materially innovative, often blurring the lines between craft, design, and fine art.

Application guidance

The Craft Prize is open to professional artists, designers, and craftspeople from any country, with no age limit. Applicants must submit images and details of a single, recent work (created within the last five years) that demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship and artistic intent. The work should be original, not previously awarded, and available for exhibition. The jury looks for a clear, distinctive voice and a deep understanding of materials; technical virtuosity alone is insufficient. The application process is entirely online, typically opening in the spring and closing in the summer. There is no entry fee. Artists are advised to present high-quality photography that captures the work's materiality and detail, and to articulate the conceptual underpinnings of their practice concisely. The Foundation does not accept applications via email or post. For the most current guidelines, deadlines, and eligibility criteria, always consult the official Loewe Foundation Craft Prize website.
