About the foundation

The Maine Humanities Council, founded in 1972 as a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, is an independent nonprofit dedicated to deepening understanding of the human experience through literature, history, philosophy, and culture. Its Arts & Humanities Grants support projects that bring scholars, artists, and communities together in Maine, prioritizing public engagement over academic exclusivity. The Council’s ethos is rooted in the belief that the humanities are a public good, best experienced through conversation, reflection, and shared inquiry.

Application guidance

Applicants should demonstrate a clear public humanities component—such as interpretive programs, discussions, or exhibitions—and articulate how the project fosters dialogue within a specific Maine community. Avoid abstract proposals; instead, show concrete partnerships with local libraries, schools, or historical societies. Budgets should be realistic and modest, with an emphasis on impact rather than scale. Contact program staff early to discuss eligibility, and review past funded projects for tone and scope.
