About the foundation

MASS MoCA, founded in 1999 in North Adams, Massachusetts, transformed a sprawling 19th-century factory complex into one of the largest centers for contemporary art in the United States. Its founding ethos was to provide artists with the space, time, and freedom to create ambitious works that would be difficult to realize elsewhere, while engaging the public through immersive and often large-scale installations. The museum's core mission is to champion art that is experimental, process-driven, and responsive to its unique industrial architecture, fostering a dialogue between artists and audiences that prioritizes risk-taking over convention.

Application guidance

Artists should approach MASS MoCA with a clear understanding of its unique spatial and institutional context. Proposals for the Studios residency should demonstrate a thoughtful engagement with the museum's industrial architecture and a willingness to work at scale. While there is no single formula, the selection committee values projects that are conceptually rigorous, materially innovative, and feasible within the available resources. It is advisable to research past residencies and exhibitions to align expectations, and to articulate how the residency would specifically advance the work. Applications are typically accepted through open calls, and artists are encouraged to apply even if their practice does not fit traditional disciplinary boundaries.
