About the foundation

Meaning of Home is a national writing contest for Canadian students in grades 4, 5, and 6, founded on the belief that home is a fundamental theme worthy of young people's serious reflection. The contest invites children to articulate, in prose or poetry, what home means to them—not as a sentimental exercise, but as a way to cultivate empathy and civic awareness. Each entry triggers a donation to Habitat for Humanity Canada, linking personal expression to tangible community impact. The organization operates with a clear, accessible structure: an annual call, a jury of educators and writers, and a celebration of selected works that are published online and in print.

Application guidance

Entries are accepted annually, typically between September and February, and must be submitted through the official website. The contest is open only to Canadian students in grades 4, 5, and 6. Writers should focus on honest, specific reflections—judges value clarity and sincerity over elaborate vocabulary. Prose or poetry is welcome, with a suggested length of 50–300 words. Each entry requires a parent or guardian's consent and a valid Canadian address. Teachers may submit on behalf of a class, but individual submissions are equally encouraged. Winning entries are selected by a panel of educators and writers, and prizes include grants for the student's school and a donation to Habitat for Humanity in the student's name. For full rules and deadlines, consult the 'How It Works' page on the official site.
