About the foundation

The Mellon Foundation, established in 1969 through the merger of the Avalon and Old Dominion Foundations, is the largest private funder of the arts and humanities in the United States. Its founding ethos centers on the belief that the humanities and arts are essential to a just and democratic society, and it has consistently supported scholarship, cultural institutions, and public knowledge production. Over decades, Mellon has shaped fields such as digital humanities, area studies, and conservation, while also responding to contemporary urgencies through initiatives like the Monuments Project and the Higher Learning program, which invites bold concepts to reimagine higher education's public role.

Application guidance

Approach Mellon with a clear articulation of how your project advances the humanities or arts in a way that is both intellectually substantive and publicly consequential. The foundation favors proposals that demonstrate deep contextual awareness, feasible implementation plans, and potential for field-wide impact rather than isolated outputs. For the Higher Learning Open Call for Concepts, focus on innovative, scalable ideas that address systemic challenges in higher education, and ensure your concept aligns with Mellon's stated commitments to equity, access, and the public good. Avoid generic appeals; instead, show a nuanced understanding of the problem and a credible pathway to change.
