About the foundation

The Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential (MiLEAP) is a state agency established in 2023 to unify and elevate Michigan's education and workforce development efforts from early childhood through postsecondary education and into career pathways. Its founding ethos rests on the conviction that learning is a continuous, lifelong endeavor and that state government should play a catalytic role in removing barriers to opportunity. MiLEAP administers a range of programs—including the MI Future Educator Fellowship, which supports aspiring teachers—with the goal of building a more skilled, equitable, and adaptable Michigan workforce.

Application guidance

Artists and cultural organizations seeking support from MiLEAP should first review its program offerings, which are primarily focused on education and workforce training rather than direct arts funding. The MI Future Educator Fellowship, for example, targets future educators, not artists. If your work aligns with MiLEAP's mission—such as integrating arts into STEM education or creative youth development—consider partnering with a school district or nonprofit that is eligible to apply. Direct applications from individual artists are generally not accepted. Monitor the MiLEAP website and official bulletins for calls that may relate to creative learning or career pathways. When contacting the department, be concise, reference specific programs, and demonstrate how your project advances lifelong learning and potential.
