About the foundation

Pacific Islanders in Communications (PIC) was founded in 1991 to address the severe underrepresentation of Pacific Islander voices in American media. Established as a national nonprofit with a mandate to support, promote, and develop independent film and video projects by and about Pacific Islanders, PIC has become a vital conduit for stories from Hawai‘i, Guam, American Samoa, and the broader diaspora. Its core mission is to increase the quantity and quality of programming that reflects the rich and diverse cultures of the Pacific, often in partnership with public broadcasting entities like PBS and CPB.

Application guidance

Applicants should first review PIC's current funding cycles, which typically include the PIC Shorts Fund and other production or completion grants. Proposals must demonstrate a clear connection to Pacific Islander communities—ideally with key creative personnel from those communities—and a thoughtful distribution plan, often for public television. Avoid generic cultural overviews; instead, articulate a specific story that challenges stereotypes or fills a historical gap. Budgets should be realistic and align with PIC's modest grant ranges. It is advisable to contact PIC staff before submitting to confirm eligibility and fit, as the fund prioritizes projects that can realistically be completed and broadcast.
