About the foundation

The Pollock-Krasner Foundation was established in 1985 as the executor of Lee Krasner's estate, following the artist's death. Krasner, a formidable painter in her own right and the widow of Jackson Pollock, envisioned a foundation that would provide direct financial assistance to working artists, enabling them to focus on their creative practice without the burden of financial hardship. The Foundation's core mission is to award grants to painters, sculptors, and artists who work on paper, including printmakers, who demonstrate financial need and artistic merit. Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded over 4,900 grants totaling more than $85 million to artists in 78 countries, making it one of the most significant private funders of individual artists worldwide. Its ethos is rooted in Krasner's own experience and her commitment to supporting artists at critical junctures in their careers, with a particular emphasis on those who have limited resources but exceptional talent.

Application guidance

Artists should carefully review the eligibility criteria: applicants must be painters, sculptors, or artists working on paper (including printmakers), and must demonstrate financial need. The Foundation does not fund photographers, digital artists, or performance artists unless their work falls within the specified categories. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but it is advisable to submit well before the stated deadlines. The review process is highly competitive, so a strong application will clearly articulate the artist's creative practice, career trajectory, and specific financial circumstances. Work samples should be of high quality and represent a cohesive body of work. It is recommended to prepare a compelling artist statement and a detailed budget outlining how the grant would be used. The Foundation values authenticity and artistic integrity, so avoid overly commercial or generic presentations. For guidance, consult the Foundation's website for detailed instructions and frequently asked questions.
