About the foundation

The IDFA Bertha Fund (IBF) Classic is a production and post-production grant administered by the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA). Established in 1998 as the Jan Vrijman Fund, it was later renamed in recognition of a major endowment from the Bertha Foundation. The fund supports documentary filmmakers from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe, regions where independent documentary production often faces structural and financial obstacles. Its core mission is to foster a diversity of voices in the global documentary landscape by providing crucial finishing funds and production support to projects that might otherwise remain unseen.

Application guidance

Applicants should first confirm eligibility based on the fund's rotating regional focus. The IBF Classic prioritizes projects with a strong directorial vision and a clear narrative or stylistic approach. While social and political themes are common, the fund seeks films that transcend mere reportage. For production grants, a well-developed treatment and a realistic budget are essential; for post-production, a rough cut that demonstrates the film's potential is required. Deadlines are typically annual, and competition is intense. It is advisable to apply with a project that has already secured some initial support or has a compelling sample. The fund values authenticity and originality, so avoid over-polishing or mimicking Western documentary trends. Instead, present a distinct voice and a feasible plan for completion and distribution.
