About the foundation

The Ripple Foundation is a Canadian charitable organization dedicated to fostering creativity and literacy among young people. Founded with the belief that every child has a story to tell, the foundation's flagship program, Kids Write 4 Kids, invites students in grades 4 through 8 to submit original works of fiction or creative non-fiction. The contest not only encourages young writers to find their voice but also provides a tangible outcome: winning stories are professionally published and sold, with proceeds supporting literacy initiatives. This ethos of empowering youth through publication and peer-to-peer inspiration distinguishes the foundation within the literary landscape.

Application guidance

The Kids Write 4 Kids contest is open to students in grades 4–8 across Canada. Submissions should be original works of fiction or creative non-fiction, typically between 500 and 3,000 words. Young writers are encouraged to explore themes that resonate with their own experiences and imaginations. The foundation values authentic voice and creativity over strict adherence to genre conventions. Before submitting, carefully review the annual guidelines on the website for specific word limits, deadlines, and formatting requirements. Teachers and parents can support entrants by fostering a love of reading and writing, but the work must be the student's own. Winners receive publication and royalties, making this a unique opportunity for young authors to see their work professionally produced.
