About the foundation

The Whiting Foundation, established in 1963, is a private grantmaking organization dedicated to supporting the humanities and the arts. Its core mission is to identify and nurture exceptional talent, primarily through its Whiting Awards, which provide $50,000 to emerging writers of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama. The foundation also supports scholarly research and public engagement with the humanities, reflecting a commitment to the life of the mind and the cultural vitality of society. By focusing on early-career artists and scholars, the Whiting Foundation seeks to enable recipients to devote themselves fully to their work, free from financial constraint.

Application guidance

The Whiting Awards are by nomination only; there is no open application process. Writers cannot apply directly. Nominators, who are anonymous and selected by the foundation, identify candidates who have not yet received widespread recognition. Therefore, artists should focus on developing their craft and gaining visibility through publications, performances, or other means that might bring them to the attention of nominators. For other programs, such as the Whiting Public Engagement Fellowship, applications may be open; interested parties should consult the foundation's website for specific guidelines and deadlines.
