What does “fully funded” mean on a call?
“Fully funded” means the organizer pays for a stated package. Your job is to find every cost inside that package and every cost outside it.
For a residency abroad, check travel, housing, workspace, meals, stipend, insurance and visa costs. For a grant, check what you can spend it on, when it’s paid and what reports you’ll owe. For a prize, separate the award from any travel or event support for shortlisted writers.
Funding and open status are two different facts. A program can fund generous residencies this year and have no open call today. A residency happening right now may have picked its people months ago.
Be careful with roundups that copy an old call. Follow the link to the organizer, find the current edition and open the actual form. An old “apply now” button or a search snippet isn’t enough. Our guide to no-fee and funded residencies shows how to turn a funding description into a real budget.
Which programs should Nigerian artists and writers watch?
These four programs are worth knowing, but every cycle below was closed on October 7, 2026. Treat them as programs to watch for the next round, not calls to enter now.
Each one shows a different route to support, and a different eligibility lesson:
| Program | Who it was for | What it funded | Status on October 7, 2026 | What it teaches |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| G.A.S. Fellowship Award 2026 | Who it was forNigerian artists, art writers and other named groups | What it fundedFunded stays in Lagos and Ikise; terms vary by category | Status on October 7, 2026Closed; recipients announced | What it teachesEach category has its own rules |
| RESONANCE | Who it was forVisual artists, designers and curators living and working in Nigeria | What it fundedThree months in Paris: live-in studio, allowance, travel | Status on October 7, 20262026–2027 window closed | What it teachesWhere you’re based matters; any nationality can apply |
| Prince Claus Seed Awards | Who it was forPeople from, and living in, eligible countries | What it fundedA cash award; check the permitted uses | Status on October 7, 20262026 cycle closed (deadline was January 8, 2026) | What it teachesOrigin and residence can both count |
| Caine Prize for African Writing | Who it was forPublished short fiction by African writers | What it fundedPrize money; check any event support | Status on October 7, 20262026 closed; next window not yet open | What it teachesPublishers enter, not writers |
The Caine Prize’s page says the next window opens in November 2026 and closes in January 2027, but its exact dates don’t agree with each other. It lists “Monday, 21 November”, and November 21, 2026 is a Saturday. Ask the prize to confirm before you plan around a date. For 2027, the page says the story must have been published between February 27, 2022 and February 27, 2026 and run 3,000 to 10,000 words.
Are there funded calls in Nigeria itself?
Yes. Programs based in Nigeria can fund your work without the visa and long-haul flight a residency abroad needs.
The G.A.S. Fellowship Award, from Guest Artists Space Foundation and the Yinka Shonibare Foundation, is one, with separate categories and locations. Its recipient announcement confirms the 2026 selection is done. Watch for the next edition instead of applying to this one.
The 2026 call shows what a funded package in naira can look like. The art writers’ category listed a ₦1,900,000 stipend, travel and materials allowance, a ₦760,000 honorarium for running a three-day writing workshop, and a private room with a desk and en-suite bathroom in Lagos. Trips outside Lagos were at the resident’s own cost, except to the G.A.S. Farm House.
Location inside Nigeria still matters. A residency in Lagos or Ikise can mean travel, time away from work and a temporary home. Check whether transport, meals and materials are paid, and whether you’re expected to run workshops or public events.
Don’t assume an art-writing category takes fiction or poetry. Art criticism, curatorial research and literary work can sit under different rules. Read the category definition and sample requirements before you choose. Strong work won’t fix a mismatch between what you make and what the call wants.
How do I check whether “international” includes Nigeria?
Check three things separately: your citizenship, where you live now and where you work. A call can restrict any of them, whether you’re in Lagos, Accra or Dakar.
Read the whole eligibility paragraph, not just the word “international”. A program might accept every nationality but require you to live in one country. Another might accept diaspora applicants but require a particular citizenship or family link. A regional grant might want both residence and a local project.
RESONANCE’s rules require you to live and work in Nigeria, and accept any nationality within its categories. The Prince Claus Fund’s FAQ works differently: you must come from, and live and work in, an eligible country. The Caine Prize counts you as an African writer if you’re a national of an African country or have a parent who is African by birth or nationality. Those are three different tests.
Before you prepare any work, write down the answers:
| Question | What to write down |
|---|---|
| Citizenship or origin | What to write downThe exact definition in the rules |
| Where you live | What to write downWhere you must live when you apply and during the award |
| What you make | What to write downThe kind of work accepted, not a broad label |
| Career stage | What to write downThe organizer’s definition and the proof it asks for |
| Availability | What to write downDates, length and any in-person commitments |
| How to apply | What to write downDirectly, by nomination, or through a publisher |
If a rule is unclear, email the organizer one short, factual question: “I’m a Nigerian citizen living and working in Abuja. Does the residence rule let me apply in the visual art category?” Include only what they need to answer it.
What about visas and travel for residencies abroad?
Before you decide an overseas residency is affordable, find out who pays for travel and the visa, and when the money arrives.
Ask who books the flights, whether costs are capped, and whether the award pays before you leave or reimburses you after. Ask whether the organizer sends invitation documents and names a contact for travel. An invitation letter doesn’t guarantee a visa.
Use the destination’s official immigration site for the route that fits your actual activities and length of stay. The right permission can depend on paid work, public performances, teaching or other duties, as well as how long you’ll stay. For France, start with the official France-Visas service and the residency’s own guidance. Another resident’s visa route may not be yours.
Build your timeline from the organizer’s confirmed dates and the visa process. Leave room for documents and delays, and don’t treat a typical processing time as a promise. Ask what happens if your visa is delayed or refused, and whether the program can move your stay.
RESONANCE’s closed call drew the line clearly: travel to Paris was covered, the visa and insurance weren’t. Put both in your budget before you apply to a future edition.
How do I pay entry fees in naira, or avoid them?
Start with calls that confirm no application fee. For any call that charges, check how you can pay and what the full charge will be.
Begin with residencies with no application fee and grants. A grant isn’t automatically free to apply for, and a no-fee residency isn’t automatically funded to attend. Missa cards show the fee, “No fee”, or “Fee not listed” when the organizer’s page doesn’t say.
If there’s a fee, ask whether the organizer takes a payment method you can use and whether a waiver exists. Confirm the amount and currency at the actual checkout. Your bank or card provider can tell you its own conversion and transaction charges. Don’t budget from an old exchange rate quoted in a roundup.
If a fee stands between you and a call that fits your work, a short waiver request is fine. Name the category, say you can’t pay the application fee, and ask whether there’s a waiver or another way to enter. You don’t need to share your finances in the first message.
Pay only through the organizer’s own payment page. If someone finds your public profile and offers to pay a fee for you, check with the organizer directly first, and never share a password or account access.
How do I build a funding shortlist?
Keep two lists: calls you can enter now, and programs to watch. Otherwise a closed call can sit in an open tab for months, looking hopeful.
For each one, note the official source, the date you checked, your eligibility answer, what the funding covers, what you’d still pay and how you apply.
For each live call, set a preparation date and gather the samples. Our residency application guide covers reusable materials and how to write the proposal. Fit the project to what the program actually offers, and don’t claim partnerships or travel plans that aren’t confirmed.
Missa’s country pages help you find calls, but the organizer decides who’s eligible. Check their current rules and apply on their page. Keep a copy of the call and your receipt, so you’re not relying on memory if anything changes. Save a call on Missa and you’ll get reminders two weeks, one week, three days and one day before the deadline, in your time zone.
