About the magazine

Gulf Coast Literary Journal, based at the University of Houston, has been a vital force in contemporary letters since its founding in 1986. Established by graduate students in the Creative Writing Program, it was conceived as a space where rigorous craft meets the diverse voices of the Gulf Coast region and beyond. Over three decades, the journal has evolved into a nationally recognized publication, featuring poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and critical art writing that challenge and illuminate. Its mission is rooted in a commitment to literary excellence, inclusivity, and the belief that thoughtful editing can foster a vibrant community of readers and writers.

Submitting your work

Reading periodOpen now

Gulf Coast welcomes submissions from writers at all stages of their careers. Before submitting, carefully review the journal's aesthetic range by reading recent issues, many of which are available online. The editors value work that demonstrates a command of language, emotional depth, and a willingness to take risks. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify the journal immediately if your work is placed elsewhere. Expect response times of three to six months; during peak periods, this may extend. The journal charges a modest fee for online submissions, which helps sustain its operations, but fee waivers are available for those who need them. Always adhere to the stated word limits and genre guidelines, and include a brief cover letter that contextualizes your work without overselling it.
