About the magazine

The Poetry Center at Passaic County Community College (PCCC), founded in 1980, is one of the longest-running and most respected poetry reading series in the United States. Under the direction of Maria Mazziotti Gillan, it has built a reputation for inclusivity, welcoming poets from diverse backgrounds and at all stages of their careers. Its mission is to bring poetry to a wide audience through free readings, workshops, and publications, with a particular emphasis on voices that have been historically marginalized. The Center also publishes The Paterson Literary Review, an annual journal that reflects its commitment to accessible, narrative, and emotionally resonant poetry.

Submitting your work

Reading periodVaries

The Poetry Center welcomes submissions from poets at all career stages, though it is particularly receptive to work that is accessible, narrative-driven, and emotionally honest. Before submitting to The Paterson Literary Review or applying for the Allen Ginsberg Poetry Awards, read several issues to understand the aesthetic. The Center values authenticity and clarity over experimental obscurity. For readings, there is no formal application; the curators often invite poets whose work they have encountered in the journal or at other readings. If you are local to New Jersey, attending events and participating in workshops is a good way to become part of the community. Always follow submission guidelines carefully and include a brief bio that highlights your connection to poetry communities.
