About the magazine

The Society for the Study of Psychiatry, Culture and Global Mental Health is an interdisciplinary scholarly organization dedicated to examining the intersections of psychiatric practice, cultural meaning, and global mental health disparities. Founded by a coalition of clinicians, anthropologists, and historians, the Society emerged from a shared concern that mainstream psychiatry often neglects the cultural and structural contexts of distress. Its mission is to foster critical dialogue across disciplines—bringing together ethnographic, historical, and clinical perspectives—to rethink how mental health is understood, diagnosed, and treated worldwide. Through annual conferences, working groups, and publications, the Society provides a platform for rigorous, reflexive scholarship that challenges universalist assumptions and attends to local realities.

Submitting your work

Reading periodVaries

Proposals should clearly articulate the cultural, historical, or structural dimensions of mental health and demonstrate engagement with relevant theoretical frameworks. The Society favors work that is empirically grounded and critically reflexive, avoiding purely clinical outcome studies without cultural analysis. Individual papers and posters are welcome, but successful submissions often connect to the annual theme and speak across disciplines. Early-career scholars and practitioners from the Global South are encouraged to apply. Abstracts should be concise (250–300 words) and include a brief bibliography. The review process is peer-based and values clarity, originality, and ethical sensitivity.
