About the magazine

Founded in 2019, the Under Review is an online literary journal that publishes poetry, fiction, and nonfiction, with a particular emphasis on work that engages with the visual arts. The journal was established by a group of writers and artists who sought to create a space where literary and visual practices could converse, and where the review of art would be treated as a creative act in itself. Its core mission is to foster a community of writers who are also attentive readers of images, and to provide a platform for work that is formally adventurous and intellectually curious.

Writers should familiarize themselves with the journal's aesthetic by reading recent issues, which often feature ekphrastic work or writing that responds to visual media. Submissions are accepted during reading periods, typically in winter and summer. The editors appreciate cover letters that contextualize the work's relationship to visual art, if applicable. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please notify promptly if your work is placed elsewhere. The Under Review does not charge submission fees, and pays contributors in copies and exposure. Response times vary, but generally range from one to three months.
