About the magazine

The Upper New is an online journal and small press dedicated to environmental writing and art. Founded in 2016, it takes its name from the Upper New River, which flows through the Appalachian Mountains. The journal publishes poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and visual art that engage with the natural world, often with a focus on place, ecology, and the human-nature relationship. Its mission is to provide a platform for voices that might otherwise go unheard, emphasizing work that is both artistically rigorous and environmentally conscious.

Submitting your work

Reading periodVaries

The Upper New accepts submissions of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and visual art. They are particularly interested in work that demonstrates a strong sense of place and a thoughtful engagement with environmental themes. Writers should read past issues to understand the journal's aesthetic, which favors clear, evocative language over polemic. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please notify promptly if your work is accepted elsewhere. The journal typically responds within 2-3 months. For visual art, submit high-quality images and a brief artist statement. There are no reading fees for regular submissions, though they may have occasional contests with fees.
