About the magazine

The Watering Hole is a poetry organization founded in 2012 by poet and educator Candace G. Wiley, with a mission to provide a nurturing and rigorous space for poets of color. Initially conceived as a retreat for African American poets, it has expanded to welcome all writers of color, offering workshops, residencies, and fellowships that prioritize craft, community, and professional development. The organization is rooted in the belief that poets of color need dedicated spaces to hone their skills, share their work, and build sustainable careers. Through its programs, The Watering Hole aims to address the historical underrepresentation of marginalized voices in literary institutions by creating pathways for publication, performance, and leadership.

Submitting your work

Reading periodVaries

Artists should approach The Watering Hole with a clear sense of their poetic project and a willingness to engage in both generative and revision-focused work. Applications typically require a sample of poems, a statement of purpose, and sometimes a project proposal. It is advisable to demonstrate how the organization's mission aligns with your own creative goals and to articulate what you hope to contribute to and gain from the community. Given the emphasis on professional development, highlighting any teaching, editing, or community organizing experience can be beneficial. Deadlines and specific requirements vary by program, so consult the website regularly for current opportunities.
