About the magazine

The Yale Institute of Sacred Music (ISM) is an interdisciplinary center at Yale University dedicated to the study and practice of sacred music, worship, and the arts. Founded in 1973 as a joint initiative of the Yale Divinity School and the Yale School of Music, the Institute prepares graduate students for careers in church music, liturgical studies, and related fields, while fostering scholarly inquiry into the intersection of religion and the arts. Its mission is to cultivate a deep understanding of sacred traditions and their expressive cultures, bridging academic rigor with practical ministry and artistic creation. Over the decades, the ISM has expanded its scope to include visual arts, literature, and ecology, reflecting a broad commitment to the role of the arts in religious life. Through its degree programs, public concerts, conferences, and artist residencies, the Institute serves as a hub for dialogue among theologians, musicians, artists, and scholars. Its initiatives, such as the upcoming Religion, Ecology & Expressive Culture program, exemplify its ongoing engagement with contemporary issues through the lens of sacred traditions.

Artists and scholars interested in engaging with the ISM should first familiarize themselves with its mission and current initiatives. Opportunities range from degree programs to residencies, grants, and public calls. For the Religion, Ecology & Expressive Culture initiative, applicants are encouraged to submit proposals that demonstrate a thoughtful integration of ecological concerns with sacred or religious themes, and that reflect the Institute's commitment to interdisciplinary approaches. It is advisable to review past projects and faculty research to align one's work with the ISM's ethos. Applications should articulate both artistic merit and theological or spiritual relevance, avoiding overly commercial or secular framings. Deadlines are typically strict, and materials should be prepared with academic and artistic rigor in mind.
