Brevity: Brief Nonfiction (750 Words or Less)

Overview
Brevity is a magazine dedicated to the extremely brief essay form, publishing both well-known and emerging writers. The journal seeks work that, as Bernard Cooper suggests in his preface to In Short, 'requires an alertness to detail, a quickening of the senses, a focusing of the literary lens ... until one has magnified some small aspect of what it means to be human.' The editors look for essays with vivid detail, strong voice, and no wasted words. Upon acceptance, Brevity asks for first serial rights, as well as the possibility of publishing the work in a future anthology; all subsequent rights revert immediately to the author. Authors will be paid a $45 honorarium for work selected. The magazine seldom publishes previously-published work, but does not rule it out; writers should indicate if an essay has appeared previously and where. Works that are forthcoming in other publications are not considered. Simultaneous submissions are permitted, but writers must alert the magazine by withdrawing the submission if the work is accepted elsewhere. The submission deadline is April 30, 2027. A fee of $3.00 (USD) is required. Brevity is an online publication, and submissions are accepted remotely.
