Flyway Journal: Fiction
Overview
Flyway: Journal of Writing & Environment, based at Iowa State University, is an online journal with a longstanding commitment to work that interrogates the many valences of 'environment'—rural, urban, suburban, built, wild—and their social and political implications. The journal publishes poetry, fiction, nonfiction, short scripts, and visual art, and has sponsored awards such as the Iowa Sweet Corn Prize. This call is for fiction only, with a reading window of September 1 to October 15, 2025, for the Winter/Spring 2026 issue. The journal seeks short fiction between 500 and 5,000 words. There is no prize associated with this call; it is a general submission opportunity for publication. A nominal fee of $3 per submission is required. Flyway's editorial scope is defined by its attention to environment as a contested and layered term, and fiction that engages with place, landscape, ecology, or the politics of space—whether explicitly or obliquely—is likely to find a receptive readership. Given the journal's history and its location at Iowa State University, contributors can expect a serious, literarily grounded consideration of their work. The journal's interest in LGBTQ+ and queer writing is reflected in its genres and its ongoing engagement with underrepresented voices. This is not a contest with a cash prize; it is a publication opportunity in a journal with a distinct curatorial identity.
