Press 53: Poetry Submission

Overview
Prime Number Magazine operates on a quadrimester rhythm, with each four-month cycle overseen by a new guest poetry editor. For Issue 293, covering September through December 2026, the press has appointed Vaughn M. Watson, author of going out & being normal, to shape the poetry section. The submission window runs from May 1 to June 30, 2026, closing at midnight Eastern time or upon receipt of 199 submissions, whichever comes first. There is no reading fee. The terms of engagement are deliberately narrow and transparent: one unpublished poem of up to three pages, written in English, set in a standard font such as Times or Garamond, and presented in whatever style the poet wishes readers to encounter. Poets may submit once per submission period. The cap of 199 submissions is not an arbitrary threshold but a curatorial constraint that allows a single guest editor to read with sustained attention rather than triage. Publication is scheduled for September 1, 2026, with acceptances and rejections communicated, at best effort, one month prior. What the magazine offers is not a prize but a place in a specific issue, shaped by a specific editorial sensibility. The rotating guest editorship means each issue carries the imprint of a different poet's judgment, and the quadrimester structure—January–February, May–June, September–October—establishes a predictable calendar for repeat submissions. The press's decision to waive fees and to limit volume signals an institutional preference for care over scale.
