AGNI: Proximity Portfolio (Art)
Overview
AGNI has long treated the portfolio as a curatorial instrument rather than a mere grouping—a way to convene voices around a shared inquiry and to correct the historical underattention paid to certain bodies of work. 'Proximity: An AGNI Portfolio of Writing and Art by Women of Color' extends that practice under the co-editorship of senior editor Shuchi Saraswat with guest editors Ru Freeman and Preti Taneja. The call is deliberately global in scope, gathering women writers and artists of color who work—in text or image—to excavate and interrogate the systems of power that shape us both locally and internationally. The organizing term is capacious by design. Proximity may be geographic, political, linguistic, historical, embodied, environmental, generational, or intimate; the editors ask what is risked and what is yearned for when oppression and injustice are engaged through art, and how practitioners might support and challenge one another toward liberation. This is not a theme to be illustrated but a set of relations to be tested. The portfolio's ambition is to place disparate practices in productive adjacency, so that the resonances between them become legible. There is no submission fee, and the deadline is fixed at December 15, 2026. Work is considered for publication in AGNI, a magazine with a decades-long commitment to literary and artistic seriousness. Artists and writers selected can expect the editorial attention—close reading, considered sequencing, and contextual framing—that the portfolio format affords. The editors are looking for work that is formally assured and politically awake, whether it arrives as prose, poetry, essay, or visual art.
