Press 53: Short Fiction Submission

Overview
Prime Number Magazine operates on a quadrimester cycle, with each issue entrusted to a new guest editor. For Issue 307, the guest short fiction editor is Gerry Wilson, author of Crosscurrents and Other Stories. The structure is deliberate and finite: submissions are accepted from September 1 through October 31, 2026, or until 199 stories are received, whichever comes first. This cap is not incidental; it signals a reading process calibrated to attention rather than volume, and it places a premium on early, considered submission. The journal's remit is broad within the short form. Stories of up to 5,300 words are eligible, and micro, flash, and short-short fiction are explicitly welcomed. There is no reading fee. One story per submission period is permitted, and the work must be unpublished. Writers are encouraged to return in subsequent windows—January–February and May–June—should their work not find a place in this issue. Publication is scheduled for January 1, 2027, with notifications intended no later than one month prior. What the journal offers is publication within a longstanding independent literary press, editorial attention from a guest editor with a demonstrated commitment to the short story, and a defined timeline. There is no prize, no contest apparatus, and no fee. The curatorial vision is that of the guest editor, refreshed each cycle—an editorial model that favors range over house style and gives each issue a distinct temperament.
