Neon Hemlock: Speculative Fiction Chapbook
Overview
Neon Hemlock operates at the intersection of speculative fiction and queer literary practice, publishing work that treats the fantastic not as escape but as a precise instrument for examining identity, desire, and social possibility. The press's chapbook series is a deliberate intervention in the market: small-format, limited-run, and aesthetically coherent, it positions each manuscript as an object of care rather than a unit of content. This is a venue for writers whose work resists the flattening pressures of mainstream genre publishing—narratives that are formally adventurous, emotionally exact, and unapologetically rooted in queer experience. The call seeks a single novelette of 7,500 to 12,000 words, or a suite of shorter stories (flash included) that coheres as a manuscript. The press is explicit that queer experience is the throughline, broadly construed: this is not a call for coming-out narratives alone, but for work that thinks with and through queer life, history, and futurity. Selected manuscripts will be printed as 5" x 5" chapbooks—a format that rewards compression, rhythm, and the kind of attention a reader gives to a physical object held in the hand. The contract terms are transparent: $100 payment and 25 author copies from a limited print run of 100, with an option to discuss a 50/50 split if the initial run sells out. Authors retain the right to sell their copies as they wish. There is no submission fee. What the press offers, beyond the modest advance, is editorial partnership and a defined readership—a small, committed audience that treats chapbooks as collectible and consequential.
