Overland Journal: Vehicles&Destinations

Overview
Overland Journal and its companion platform Expedition Portal operate as a continuous editorial pipeline for writing and photography rooted in vehicle-supported and human-powered travel. The publication does not issue seasonal calls or themed issues; instead, it reviews incoming pitches every few weeks, maintaining a standing invitation for freelance contributors. This structure reflects an editorial model built on sustained relationships with writers and photographers rather than one-off competitions. The scope of accepted work is deliberately broad within a defined world: travel stories by 4wd, motorcycle, or human-powered means; short fiction; photo galleries without accompanying text; feature vehicle profiles; news; product reviews under the Field Tested rubric; skills and how-to pieces; and camp recipes for the Overland Chef column. Contributors are not paid a prize or stipend through this call; the compensation model is freelance assignment, negotiated upon acceptance. There is no submission fee. The curatorial vision favors lived experience over speculation. Editors are looking for work that demonstrates direct engagement with vehicles, terrain, and the practical realities of overland travel. Photo galleries are considered as standalone visual essays, while written pitches are evaluated on their specificity, narrative arc, and fit within the publication's established columns. The rolling deadline means there is no external pressure of a closing date, but also no batch review; pitches are assessed as they arrive.
