MASS MoCA’s Assets for Artists
Overview
Assets for Artists, a program of MASS MoCA, operates at the intersection of artistic practice and economic sustainability. This grant initiative is designed for Rhode Island-based creative practitioners who seek to strengthen the infrastructural and strategic dimensions of their work. The program convenes a cohort of artists for peer networking and professional development, acknowledging that sustainable creative careers are built on both community and capital. The selected artists will receive working capital grants of $1,000, intended to support capacity-building efforts—whether that means acquiring equipment, securing studio time, or investing in marketing and documentation. Beyond the financial award, the program offers a structured environment for artists to refine their operational practices, share challenges, and learn from one another. This dual focus on material support and knowledge exchange reflects a holistic understanding of what artists need to thrive. The curatorial vision is grounded in the belief that artists are also small business owners, cultural entrepreneurs, and community anchors. By prioritizing Rhode Island-based practitioners, the program invests in a specific geographic creative ecosystem while remaining open to a wide range of disciplines. The grant does not prescribe a particular aesthetic or thematic direction; instead, it seeks artists who demonstrate a clear sense of purpose and a willingness to engage in reciprocal learning.
