NEA Arts and Artifacts International Indemnity Program 2, FY2027 (3/27)
Overview
The Arts and Artifacts Indemnity Program, administered by the National Endowment for the Arts on behalf of the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities, provides indemnification against loss or damage for eligible international exhibitions of art and artifacts. This federal program enables U.S. museums and similar institutions to borrow high-value works from abroad without the prohibitive cost of commercial insurance, thereby facilitating cultural exchange and public access to significant objects. For this FY2027 cycle, applications must be submitted by March 8, 2027. The program covers exhibitions that are international in scope, meaning they include objects borrowed from outside the United States. Indemnification is provided for the period of the exhibition, including transit, and is backed by the full faith and credit of the United States government. Participating institutions are responsible for a deductible and must meet federal requirements regarding security, climate control, and emergency preparedness. The curatorial vision of the program is to support exhibitions that would not otherwise be possible without federal indemnity, prioritizing projects that demonstrate scholarly merit, public benefit, and a clear international dimension. By reducing insurance costs, the program allows institutions to allocate resources toward exhibition development, interpretation, and outreach, enriching the cultural landscape for American audiences.
