Geist: Nonfiction
Overview
Geist is a Canadian magazine with a longstanding commitment to publishing writers and artists from across the country. Its nonfiction pages are divided between Notes and Dispatches, which typically features short personal narrative of up to 2,000 words (flexible), and Features, which accommodate longer nonfiction of up to 5,000 words. The magazine acquires First North American Serial Rights and considers only original, previously unpublished work; copyright reverts to the author after publication. Submissions are read with an eye toward work that aligns with the magazine's house style and audience while remaining true to the author's intention. The editorial process is collaborative and rigorous. If a piece is selected, the author can expect to work with the editor-in-chief through several drafts and revisions until the work is ready for publication. This is not a venue for finished, untouched copy; it is a venue for writers who welcome substantive editing. The magazine's mandate to publish writers and artists from across Canada shapes its curatorial scope, and submissions should be sent one piece at a time. A submission fee of $3.00 (USD) applies. The deadline is fixed: October 9, 2026. There is no prize associated with this call; it is a standard open submission window for publication. Cover letters should include the writer's name, complete mailing address, and email.
