Geist: Fiction
Overview
Geist is a Canadian magazine with a longstanding commitment to publishing writers and artists from across the country. Its fiction section is highly selective: typically one story per issue, which places a premium on work that is fully realized, distinctive, and editorially resonant. The magazine acquires First North American Serial Rights, and copyright reverts to the author after publication. Work must be original and previously unpublished. The submission process is direct and editorially intensive. A fee of $3.00 USD applies. Writers should send one story at a time, up to 5,000 words. If selected, the author works closely with the editor-in-chief through several drafts and revisions to align the piece with Geist's house style and audience while preserving the author's intention. This is not a venue for work that resists editing; it is a collaborative literary space where revision is part of the publication process. Given the magazine's mandate, Canadian writers and those writing from a Canadian perspective are the primary constituency. The single-story-per-issue model means the competition is steep, and the editorial bar is set accordingly. The reward is publication in a magazine with a distinct national literary identity and a readership that expects craft, voice, and a certain intellectual seriousness.
