Geist: Comics: No Fee Submissions for BIPOC writers
Overview
Geist is a Canadian magazine with a longstanding commitment to publishing writers and artists from across the country. This call is specifically for comics, a form the magazine treats with the same editorial seriousness as its prose and poetry. The mandate to publish Canadian voices is central, and this no-fee submission window for BIPOC writers and artists removes a common barrier to entry. The magazine publishes shorter comics in its Notes & Dispatches section and longer comics as features, with a maximum of eight pages. Hybrid forms, such as poetry comics, are explicitly welcome. Submitters may send up to three strips or one longer comic at a time. Geist acquires First North American Serial Rights, and copyright reverts to the author after publication. Only original, previously unpublished work is considered; this includes work that has appeared on a personal blog, website, or social media. Selected pieces enter a collaborative editorial process with the editor-in-chief, who works with the author to revise and edit in keeping with Geist's house style, audience, and the author's intention. This may involve several drafts. The magazine's curatorial vision favors comics that demonstrate formal intelligence, narrative or poetic compression, and a distinct visual voice—work that rewards the reader's attention rather than merely filling space.
