AGNI: Proximity Portfolio (Writing)
Overview
AGNI has long distinguished itself by assembling portfolios that illuminate underrecognized territories of writing, and 'Proximity' extends that editorial practice with uncommon ambition. The portfolio convenes women writers and artists of color from around the world whose work excavates and interrogates the systems of power that shape us—globally and at home. The title is deliberately elastic: proximity may be geographic, political, linguistic, historical, embodied, environmental, generational, or intimate. What unites the selected work is a willingness to engage oppression and injustice through art, and to ask what is risked and what is yearned for in that engagement. The call is coedited by AGNI senior editor Shuchi Saraswat with guest editors Ru Freeman and Preti Taneja, a configuration that signals both institutional seriousness and a genuinely international frame. Submissions are open across fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and visual art. There is no submission fee. The editors describe the work they seek as fearless and unapologetic, writing and art that centers a radical new conversation—language that sets a high bar without prescribing a single aesthetic or formal approach. For the practitioner, the terms are straightforward and the stakes are editorial rather than monetary: selection means publication within a portfolio conceived as a coherent statement, not an isolated placement. AGNI's history suggests the portfolio will be read as a gathering—works in conversation with one another—which places a premium on writing that is both singular and resonant with the whole. The deadline is fixed: December 15, 2026.
