The Ear: Fiction

Overview
The Ear is a magazine that positions fiction as a vehicle for revelation—stories that disclose something previously unseen or unspoken, filling gaps in our collective understanding. The editorial stance is deliberately expansive: no prescribed genre, style, or perspective, only a demand for strong voice and narrative urgency. This is not a venue for trend-chasing or brand-building; it is a reading period for writers who trust the work to speak for itself. The submission process is anonymous by design. No bio, no cover letter, no identifying information anywhere on the manuscript. Decisions are made solely on the writing. This removes the usual markers of pedigree and self-promotion, placing emerging and established writers on the same footing. The magazine explicitly welcomes work from perspectives traditionally underrepresented in publishing, but the mechanism is not tokenism—it is a structural commitment to let the story carry the weight. There is no fee to submit, and the prize is publication itself. One story per genre per reading period, with a maximum of 5,000 words. The reading period closes on December 31, 2026. The curatorial vision is coherent: The Ear seeks the freshest material, work that reveals, and voices that might otherwise go unheard. For the writer, the appeal is a rare chance to be read without the noise of a personal narrative attached.
