Breaking Borders II — Litro World Series 2027

Overview
Litro Magazine's return to the Breaking Borders theme arrives ten years after the inaugural 2017 edition, and the intervening decade has sharpened the questions the series first posed. The call is deliberately expansive in its understanding of what a border is: not only the lines between nations and languages, but the fault lines running through families, relationships, neighbourhoods, screens, and a person's own sense of self. The editors name the conditions—war, displacement, political division, economic pressure, and technologies that simultaneously connect and isolate—without prescribing a response to them. This is a curatorial frame built on inquiry rather than thesis. The scope of the project is institutional as well as editorial. Selected work will appear in a print and digital edition, and the 2027 cycle includes events and public programmes across Los Angeles, London, and New York. For contributors, this means publication within a transatlantic framework and the possibility of their work entering a public conversation beyond the page. The magazine's explicit interest in audio alongside fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and art signals that the edition is conceived as a multi-form project rather than a strictly literary one. The editorial position is stated with unusual clarity: "We want strong work, not slogans." Litro is not seeking work that tells readers what to think, nor work that reduces complex divisions to declarative positions. The invitation is to get underneath the divisions—to render them as they are experienced, in language and form that can hold contradiction. Artists and writers working across borders, whether geographic, linguistic, or psychological, are the natural constituency for this call.
