2027 I Am America Letter Writing Application (2nd-5th)
Overview
The 2027 I Am America Publishing Contest is a juried call for writing and artwork by students in grades 2–5, organized in partnership with the National Medal of Honor Museum, iWRITE Literacy Organization, and The Bryan Museum, alongside author Brad Meltzer and illustrator Christopher Eliopoulos. The contest is situated within the commemorations of America’s 250th anniversary and asks young contributors to consider how the Medal of Honor values—Courage, Sacrifice, Commitment, Integrity, Citizenship, and Patriotism—have shaped individuals, communities, or the nation itself. Submissions may take the form of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, letters, or artwork. Each entry must engage at least one of the six values and demonstrate how that value guided the actions, decisions, or contributions of a chosen person or ideal. Subjects may be drawn from history, the applicant’s family or community, or the applicant’s own experience. Selected work will be published in an anthology, providing a tangible platform for young voices at a national moment of reflection. There is no entry fee. The deadline is February 16, 2027. The contest is designed for early elementary students, and the anthology serves as both a record of youthful perspective and a civic archive. The curatorial vision is rooted in the belief that American identity is best understood through specific, personal narratives—letters to a hero, a poem about a grandparent, a drawing of a local leader—rather than through abstraction. The jury will seek work that is sincere, specific, and formally clear, with an emphasis on the authentic voice of the child.
