2027 I Am America Poetry Application (2nd-12th)
Overview
This call is part of the 2027 I Am America Publishing Contest, organized in honor of America’s 250th anniversary. It is a student competition, open to grades 2 through 12, and is presented in partnership with the National Medal of Honor Museum, iWRITE Literacy Organization, and The Bryan Museum, with collaboration from the New York Times. The contest seeks poetry, alongside fiction, nonfiction, letters, and artwork, that celebrates a person who inspires the writer and helps tell the story of America. Selected work will be published in an anthology. The curatorial premise is explicit: each submission must incorporate one or more Medal of Honor values—Courage, Sacrifice, Commitment, Integrity, Citizenship, or Patriotism—and demonstrate how those values guided the actions, decisions, or contributions of the chosen subject. That subject may be a historical figure, a family member, a community member, or the writer’s own experience. The result is a collection that ties personal narrative to civic ideals, asking young poets to locate the abstract in the particular. There is no entry fee. The deadline is February 16, 2027. The anthology will be published in connection with the 250th anniversary, giving accepted students a place in a volume that will circulate beyond the classroom. For poets working in schools or with young writers, this is a rare no-cost route to print with an institutional frame that takes the work seriously.
