Nature Awards — The Spinoff Prize 2027
Overview
The Spinoff Prize, administered by Nature Awards, is an international award for academic entrepreneurs whose companies are founded on original research in the life sciences or physical sciences. The prize recognizes ventures that translate high-quality scientific work into products and services addressing market problems with the potential for positive societal impact. Digital approaches—including artificial intelligence, deep learning, neuromorphic computing, and quantum computing—are explicitly within scope when grounded in those scientific domains. The award operates in stages. A longlist of spinoffs will be profiled in an online special report published in Nature, alongside a list of companies designated as 'ones to watch.' Finalist spinoffs will pitch at slam panels on 7th and 8th July in Heidelberg, Germany. The winner receives a €30,000 cash prize. There is no application fee. The curatorial vision is translational and evidence-driven: the judging panel seeks spinoffs that demonstrate a clear line from peer-reviewed research to a viable product or service, and that are well positioned to make a positive impact on society. This is not a general startup competition; it is a platform for research-derived companies operating at the intersection of science and commerce.
