Northern Stage — FY27 Assistant Lead Electrician

Overview
Northern Stage operates as a LORT D 240-seat regional theater with a year-round production calendar encompassing a mainstage season, an education season, a New Works festival, and four to six additional events. The Assistant Lead Electrician position sits within the production department, reporting directly to the Lead Electrician and collaborating with Lighting Designers, Projection Designers, and other department heads. This is a staff role, not a project-based engagement, and it carries the expectation of sustained contribution to the theater's technical infrastructure. The position entails assisting in the planning and execution of all lighting and video designs, including hang, focus, maintenance, and strike. The Assistant Lead Electrician will also function as Lead Electrician for designated education productions and special events, and will help plan and execute onstage practicals, atmospherics, and special effects. Maintenance of lighting and video inventory and grid space is a shared responsibility. The role demands familiarity with the rhythms of repertory and seasonal production, as well as the ability to work across multiple concurrent projects. Northern Stage's programming explicitly includes LGBTQ+, Queer, BIPOC, Writers of Color, Disability, and Neurodivergent genres and communities within its stated disciplines. The theater's curatorial scope is therefore not limited to a single aesthetic tradition but instead reflects a commitment to varied voices and production contexts. The Assistant Lead Electrician will encounter a range of design vocabularies and collaborative structures, from mainstage realism to new work development and educational theater. This is a position for a technician who regards electrics as an artistic support rather than a purely mechanical function.
