Jack Straw Cultural Center — Jack Straw New Media Gallery Program 2027-28
Overview
For twenty-eight years, the Jack Straw New Media Gallery has operated as a rare institutional platform dedicated to sound as a primary artistic medium rather than an accompaniment. The program is housed within Jack Straw Cultural Center in Seattle, an organization whose longstanding commitment to audio production and artist support gives the gallery its particular character: it is a venue where the technical and the conceptual are treated as inseparable concerns. Artists from visual art, literature, performance, film, and other disciplines are invited to propose projects in which sound is an integral or exclusive element, positioning the gallery as a site of cross-disciplinary inquiry rather than medium-specific exhibition. Up to four artists or teams are selected for the 2027–28 cycle. Each receives up to twenty hours of free studio time with an engineer, with training provided as needed, allowing artists to realize the sound component of their project within a professional recording environment. The resulting new work is presented in the gallery the following year, accompanied by an opening reception, an artist talk or workshop, a podcast or interview published on the organization's website, and youth and family engagement programming. The selection process is evaluative and juried; applicants are encouraged to contact the center directly at arts@jackstraw.org or 206-634-0919 should the application format present accessibility barriers. The curatorial vision favors experimentation and skill development over polished presentation. The program's structure—studio time, engineering support, public exhibition, and interpretive programming—suggests an interest in work that evolves through the production process and benefits from institutional scaffolding. Artists working at the intersection of sound and other disciplines, or those seeking to incorporate audio into their practice for the first time with technical guidance, are equally legible within this framework. There is no submission fee.
