Bateau BOOM Chapbook Contest 2026/2027
Overview
Bateau Press operates at the intersection of independent publishing and community-minded literary practice. The chapbook contest is not merely a competition but an exchange: every entrant receives a copy of the winning letterpress, hand-sewn chapbook or another title from the press's catalogue. This model reflects a commitment to mutual support rather than gatekeeping, and it positions the contest as a collective endeavor. The press explicitly states, "We're not in this to get rich but we are in this for the community." That ethos shapes the entire enterprise. The winner receives $250 and 25 copies of their chapbook, produced with the care of letterpress printing and hand-sewing. The press accepts a wide range of forms—poetry, prose, comics, art, hybrids, rants, joy—and permits previously published work as long as the collection as a whole has not been published, including self-publication. Simultaneous submissions are allowed. The contest thus accommodates writers and artists whose work may have appeared in journals or online but who have not yet assembled a full manuscript. One practical limitation: due to international mailing costs, entrants outside the United States cannot receive physical chapbooks. The press offers a PDF of the winning book instead, with the author's permission. This is a constraint, not a curatorial choice, and it is stated transparently. The contest's aesthetic is open, but the press's identity suggests a preference for work that is inventive, personal, and perhaps resistant to conventional genre boundaries.
