Writers in Paradise — 2027 Novel with Stewart O'Nan
Overview
Writers in Paradise has engaged Stewart O'Nan to lead a workshop devoted to the novel-in-progress. The class is conceived as a working seminar: participants read one another's manuscripts with sustained attention to character, action, language, ideas, and setting, all in service of revision. This is not a survey of craft or a lecture series but a room of writers examining one another's pages under the guidance of a novelist whose own body of work is marked by formal restraint and psychological precision. The submission asks for the opening twenty-five pages of a novel-in-progress, followed by a one-page synopsis as page twenty-six. The synopsis must state the project's status—unfinished first draft, completed first draft, or a draft that has undergone multiple revisions—and, if the submitted pages begin later in the manuscript, summarize the preceding pages. The stated purpose is to assess the strength and readiness of the manuscript for workshop. What is submitted is what will be workshopped during the conference; the application and the workshop are continuous, not separate stages. A fee of $25 accompanies the application. Manuscripts must be submitted as Word documents (.doc or .docx). The deadline is November 2, 2026. Writers should understand that the jury is not evaluating promise in the abstract but the actual condition of a draft—whether it can sustain the scrutiny of peers and a working novelist for the duration of the conference.
