3Elements Literary Review — Art — Issue 53
Overview
3Elements Literary Review is a publication structured around a constraint: each issue names three elements, and contributors respond to at least one. For Issue 53, those elements are black hole, stream, and duct tape. The model is deliberately generative rather than prescriptive; the editors state that abstract or oblique connections are acceptable, and that representing all three elements is not required, though it will be noticed. The constraint functions less as a theme than as a shared point of departure, allowing the issue to cohere without demanding uniformity of medium or approach. The journal accepts one piece of artwork per submission. Multiple works must be sent as separate submissions; submissions containing more than one piece will not be considered. There is no submission fee. The editors do not accept work made with AI, citing the appropriation of other artists' work as the reason. Previously published work is also excluded. Accepted artists should expect to provide a short third-person biography. Because the call is open to all disciplines and the fee is zero, the primary filter is editorial judgment rather than access. The constraint is the curatorial through-line: the editors are assembling an issue in which disparate practices—whatever their medium—can be read against a common set of terms. The strongest submissions are likely to treat the element as a problem to be worked through rather than an illustration to be executed.
