2026 Ashland Poetry Broadside Contest
Overview
Ashland Poetry Press, the publishing arm of Ashland University, has established its annual Poetry Broadside Contest as a focused venue for short poems that can sustain the broadside format—a single sheet where text and design are held in careful tension. Now in its fourth year, the contest is administered by press director Chuck Carlise and judged by the poet Janine Joseph. The press's institutional commitment to poetry is longstanding, and the broadside contest reflects a specific curatorial interest: poems that are concise, visually adaptable, and capable of standing alone on the page without the scaffolding of a full collection. The submission period runs from September 1 to November 1, 2026, with electronic entries accepted via Submittable at $10 per entry. Each entry consists of one to two unpublished poems, and each poem is judged individually rather than as a pair. Poems must be 40 lines or fewer, including spaces between stanzas, and must be kept anonymous on the page. Multiple submissions are permitted, though each entry requires a separate fee. The contest is open to emerging poets, and Ashland University graduates or past students of Chuck Carlise or Janine Joseph are ineligible. First place receives $250 and 50 printed copies of the winning broadside, along with the digital original. Two runners-up each receive 25 printed copies of their broadside and the digital original. The broadside itself is the reward: a tangible, designed object that circulates the poem beyond the page of a magazine or book. The contest thus favors poems that are not only well-made but also visually and typographically resilient—work that can be read at a glance and remembered.
